WTF?! Wednesday: Freeze! Vegan Police! October 19, 2011

Welcome to WTF?! Wednesday, a regular feature here at Dos Veganos where we will highlight the absurd, humorous, and downright “DUH!” moments in the realm of nutrition and health.

In honor of New York Comic Con this past weekend (which was a super blast!) I thought it would be fun to watch one of my favorite scenes from the best comic book movie that no one really saw, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Really, who among us hasn’t found themselves in that position before: powerless and sapped of all vegan superiority because of a little slip???  ”It’s milk and eggs, bitch!” LOL

One of THE best movies ever!  And not just because it proves that vegans have superpowers!

Olympic gold medal winner, Carl Lewis, explains his vegan diet…

It’ll probably take many years before the mainstream athletic community accepts a plant-based diet as containing sufficient amounts of protein and iron, but it’s trailblazers like this guy that have gotten the Titanic moving in another direction.

The Cancer Project September 19, 2011

Greetings Fellow Veganites!

Tonight I went to a cooking and nutrition workshop presented by Jane Sirignano from the Cancer Project.  She’s the head of the CT chapter.  It was a fantastic class on cooking plant-based meals to aid in cancer prevention and survival.  She was both knowledgeable and passionate in her presentation.  We all were able to taste delicious samples of smoothies, soups (cooked and raw), guacamole, and black bean dip.  It was followed up by a vegan potluck.  The entire event was hosted by the Northern Connecticut Vegetarian Society.  I ate three plates of food (plus the food samples) and only paid eight bucks and contributed a four dollar pineapple!  (Who’s a piggie????)  I can’t say enough about how amazing the food was (and the people weren’t half bad either! LOL!).  From vegan cornbread to a lentil stew (that tasted like a sloppy joe with pulled pork) to delicious corn bread and bountiful salads.  Whatta steal!

Here’s a video of Jane Sirignano as a guest on one of our local channels:

I highly recommend checking out this amazing organization (associated with Neal Barnard and the PCRM).  My mom recently passed away of cancer so this is something I can really get behind since it’s a true preventative approach to many of our cancer-related illnesses (that is if you buy into the research of T. Colin Campbell and other nutritional scientists like him).

Hope this post can be helpful to someone who might be suffering from this painful disease or for your loved one who is…

Peas and luv,

Vegan Kickstart September 18, 2011

Greetings, True Believers!  (Yes, I think I’m Stan Lee!)  DreamGeek here.  (More on the screen name later.)  A quick intro to all my fellow plant-based peeps.  Like my partner in crime, Chantal, said:  we’re on a mission to go vegan and stay there.  Hopefully, this is support for each other and anyone else out there going against the grain of popular eating in our culture and trying to live a whole food plant-based lifestyle.

We’re on day 14 of the Vegan Kickstart Challenge and it’s been a lot of fun and I’m learning a lot.  I’m a self professed fast foodie.  Even though I was vegetarian, on average I would go out to eat five or six nights a week.  Turns out a couple months ago I had kidney stones which hurt like hell (my aunt told me that it was more painful to have kidney stones than to give birth!).  I suspect they came from a high sodium fast food diet since I really don’t eat a lot of dairy and I’m pretty much meat free.  Needless to say, I gave birth to a little calcium deposit named Earl!  So for future “birth control” I’m learning to cook my own meals and stock up in the freezer with a lot of homemade soups and bean burgers.  So the Kickstart is good.  And doing it with a friend is better.

Here are some Youtube links to a PBS special by Neal Barnard, MD, the creator of the Kickstart:

So if you’re interested in the Kickstart it’s a great support!

Glad to be a part of this experiment!

Peas and luv,

DreamGeek
